HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. It refers to the systems used to provide heating and cooling to residential and commercial buildings while ensuring indoor air quality by controlling temperature, humidity, and airflow.
Routine maintenance is essential for efficiency. Signs that you may need a maintenance check include:
Strange noises like buzzing, rattling, or grinding.
Uneven heating or cooling between rooms.
Increased energy bills without a change in usage.
Poor or weak airflow from vents.
Dirty or clogged filters.
The system cycling on and off frequently.
It is recommended to have your system serviced at least twice a year—ideally once in the fall for heating and once in the spring for cooling. Regular service extends system lifespan, improves efficiency, and reduces unexpected breakdowns.
Most systems last between 10 to 15 years, depending on usage and maintenance. If your system is over 15 years old and requires frequent repairs, it may be time to consider a replacement.
To improve efficiency and lower costs, you can:
Schedule regular maintenance.
Upgrade to a high-efficiency system with higher SEER/AFUE ratings.
Seal air leaks around doors, windows, and ducts.
Install a programmable or smart thermostat.
Use ceiling fans to help circulate air.
Add insulation to keep heat in during winter and out during summer.
Regularly changing filters maintains optimal airflow. The general guidelines are:
Standard Filters: Every 1–3 months.
HEPA or High-Efficiency Filters: Every 6–12 months.
Pet Owners/Allergy Sufferers: May need changes as often as every 1–2 months.
Common causes include:
Thermostat Settings: Ensure it is set to “heat” and the temperature is higher than the room temperature.
Ignition Issues: The pilot light may be out or the ignition system could be faulty.
Clogged Filter: A dirty filter can cause the furnace to overheat and trigger a safety shutoff.
Tripped Breaker: Check your electrical panel for a tripped furnace circuit breaker.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio): Measures the cooling efficiency of air conditioners and heat pumps.
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency): Measures how efficiently a furnace converts fuel into usable heat. Higher ratings indicate better efficiency and lower energy bills.
While possible for some components, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed professional. Improper installation can lead to safety hazards, inefficiency, and costly repairs that may void warranties.
